| Joy Lawrence is one of Antigua and Barbuda's most
prolific poets and activists in the Literary Arts. She is also a
dramatist and folklorist of significant renown. Joy was born in
the village of Bethesda on the tiny island of Antigua. After
graduating from Secondary School, she taught in both primary and
secondary schools on the island of Antigua. Her quest for
knowledge took her to institutions in Scotland California and Jamaica
where she studied Special Education and Business Education.
As a child Joy had a passionate love for literature. Her favorite
authors were Charles Dickens, Jules Verne and George Orwell. Later
on in life, however, Joy developed a heartfelt appreciation for
Caribbean writers such as Louise Bennett and Paul Keens-Douglas and
several other Caribbean writers. Joy Lawrence has a great sense of
humor which is evident in her writings.
Joy is currently employed as Senior Lecturer in the Commercial
Department at the Antigua State College. In addition to this
fulltime position and her busy writing schedule, Joy finds time to serve
as Secretary of UNESCO Literary Arts Committee and as the
Coordinator/Secretary of UNESCO/ASC Annual Poetry Competition.
Joy is featured regularly in the local newspapers and was recently
presented a UNESCO Honor Award "For Outstanding Contribution To
The Improvement Of Literacy And The Development Of The Literary Arts In
Antigua And Barbuda".

Excerpts
from Island Spice:
Showers
Pregnant clouds, darkened with labour pains
Gave birth
Replenishing the earth with new life
A Lunar Eclipse
The monstrous earth bites slowly into the luminous moon
Until it devours her whole being
Then suddenly, from the belly of this dark, relenting creature
The moon re-appears, bit by bit
Unscathed and smiling.
